Convert

Convert a Picture

We want to find pictures over a certain size in MB.

We want to resize them so they are only 1000px wide.

We want to compress the quality to 80%.

find /home/bigmac/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wp-easycart-data/products/pics4 -size +1M | while read i; do j="${i// /\ }";k="${j//(/\(}"; l="${k//)/\)}"; m="${l//&/\&}"; n=$(echo "$m"| sed 's/$/\$/g'); echo convert -resize 1000 -quality 80% $n $n;done

find /home/bigmac/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wp-easycart-data/products/pics4 -size +1M | while read I
  do
    j=”${i// /\ }”
    k=”${j//(/\(}”;
    l=”${k//)/\)}”;
    m=”${l//&/\&}”
    n=$(echo “$m”| sed ‘s/\$/\\$/g’)
    echo convert -resize 1000 -quality 80% $n $n
  done

So what does this all do?

First, we are running the find command against a Directory looking for files over 1MB.

While we are doing this we read the results as an array and look at each item as a variable called “i”.

We now do work on that variable “i”.

The work we are doing is to look in “i”, and whenever we find ” “, a space we replace the space with “\ “. This makes the new variable, “j” readable later in an echo.

Next in this new variable “j”, we look in it and search for “(” and replace with “\(“, and put in “k”.

Then “l” is “)” to “\)”.

Then “m” is “&” to “\&”.

Finally, we want to do “$”, but this is harder so we use sed.

And now we want to echo our command.

The command is convert, with a resize down to a width of 100px and a quality of 80%.

Google Classroom for Teachers

Access Google Classroom as a Teacher.

In almost ever Google App, you will find this.

Click on the 3 by 3 dots and choose Classroom, often found at the bottom of the list.

You can also just go to https://classroom.google.com.

A little thing to be careful about.

If you have more than one Google Account, it is easy to NOT find the Classroom you need.

You can see here that I have several Google Accounts. Most people only have a gmail.com Google Account, I have one of those as well plus the three you see here.

When I want to go to Classroom, I want to do it as tonyarcus@uofnkona.edu, I click on the Google Class room icon, and always end up in Classroom as tony@ai.net.nz.

Oops, then I have to switch accounts as you see here, click on tonyarcus@uofnkona.edu, and I get the right Classroom with the classes I belong to.

This happens as a bit of an error in Chrome, I am logged in on multiple accounts, my tony@ai.net.nz is the primary account and it always flicks me into Google Classroom for that account, even when I am coming fromtonyarcus@uofnkona.edu.

The quick check is to see which Icon is on your screen, that I why I have such different people Icons, a Penguin, Me & Groot.

Google Classroom as the Right User.

I am the correct user, and I can see the classrooms I expect to see.

Let’s go into FIE September 2020.

There are three main areas you are interested in:

  • Stream, the chronological order of activities in the Classroom, students and teachers can chat with each other, events can be planned, links to a Google Meet can be placed here, generally anything but Classwork.
  • Classwork, as a teacher you will put your assignments for grading, quizzes, questions, and course material in here. We have split this up in topics, one topic for each week.
  • People, as a teacher you get to see all the other teachers and students, NOTE, there is a limit on having 20 teachers and 250 students.
  • Finally, you have Grades, which is really only of interest for the course leader.

Assignments

You are going to be interested in creating Assignments.

The idea is to first get all the material you will be used together in one place, best if this is in Google Drive.

In this area, you can click on “Class Drive Folder“.

This opens up Google Drive, in your Account inside of this Classroom workspace.

When I am working with a School I go ahead and make the folders 0.communication, 0.grading, 0.resources, 0.templates.

The other two folders you see were created by Google Classroom when the teacher made an assignment called “Journal week 1”, and “Templates – DO NO EDIT”.

  • 0.communication is created so teachers have a place they can put things to communicate with other teachers.
  • 0.grading is for the course leader to have a place to managing grading outputs from Google Classroom.
  • 0.resources is a place for teachers to put any resources they want to share with the students. I then share this folder, as read-only, with all students so they can at any time look and review what teachers place there, like power points, videos, pdfs.
  • 0.templates is where teachers will put the actual working material that will be inserted into assignments. This could be MLA templates, Book Review templates, BRI templates.

Before you create an assignment for students, get your resources together, and put a copy of them in 0.resources, this could include rubrics. If you have a particulate template you want the students to do their work in, but that in 0.templates.

Now we can create a new Assignment.

Under Classwork, click on Create and choose the first option, Assignment.

Give your Assignment a Title and Instructions.

You can add a Rubric, or a file, or even a YouTube video by clicking on add.

If you add a Google Drive item, you want to go to the 0.templates we talked about previously to get it so it is available for other teacher to interact with it if needed.

Once you have the Google Drive item up and in the assignment you then have an option on how the studtens can interact with it.

When you add a Google Doc to an Assignment, it can be added as:

  1. Students can only view the file.
  2. Students can edit the file. Very rare that you would want a single file that all students can edit.
  3. Make a copy of each student. This is the most common form I have found teachers us. In the assignment there might be a template called “Book report”, now each student gets a copy of this called, “Student Name – Book Report”. When they are in Google Classroom, the can go in to the assignment, click on the file, open the book report, create their book report, it is automatically saved by Google, come back another day and finish. When finished, they can “hand in” the assignment, you will see it in grading, can open their file, and read their book report.

Hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Online Learning, Google Meet

Learning On Line with Google Meet.

Google Meet is similar to Zoom and is provided as part of your gMail account or Google Classroom.

When you are in your Google account you will have the Icon in the top right-hand corner of your screen like this.

You can see that my Icon is a Penguin. Next to it there is a set of three by three dots. This is the Google Apps Icon and is available to you on all of Googles applications.

There are many applications available to you in your Google Account.

Then there are the ones we are most interested in here. https://classroom.google.com/ & https://meet.google.com/

CentOS 8 ISO to USB

Getting the ISO

We want to create a Bootable USB that has the installation DVD for CentOS 8 on it.

First, let’s download the CentOS 8 ISO.

Next, we want to go to https://www.centos.org/download/mirrors/

Next, we want to choose a location to download from that is physically close to where you are.

Click on the Mirror Icon on the line for your download.

This opens up a list of folders. We want the one called isos

Once in isos, we next want x86_64. If you have a really old computer that is only 32 bit, then we would need to go to a different Linux architecture.

Finally, one in x86_64.

CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-dvd1.iso 08-Jun-2020 22:11 8G

Download the ISO

Click on the link for CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-dvd1.iso.
Depending on your Internet connection this would a take from 30 minutes to a couple of hours.

What does it take to broadcast around the world?

The Hardware

Wifi is okay, but a cable is better.
Unless you have a managed network, people constantly monitoring and managing a network, there can be a gap between a thing failing and you want to use it and it is not there.

Fibre in the backbone.

We have fibre coming from the mainland, to Honolulu & the Big Island, then to Kona and up in to the Campus. Fibre is good, you can run 100s of KMs of fibre at a go.
Currently we are running a couple of Fibre connections on campus, one for all the Wifi and the other for everything else. Wifi is our biggest user.
https://www.submarinecablemap.com/

Copper for broadcasting.

Once we get Fibre on to Campus and in to the main building we then build out the copper. All hardware, laptops, computers, TVs use an ethernet Jack and plug in to what is on the left here.

Our fastest Internet speed on Campus is 1,000 Mb or 1 Gb.
The cables we are putting in can handle 10 Gb!
So lots of future proofing.

What is a Gb? 1,000,000,000 bits of data a second. (more…)

Taming the Tangle

The weeks have just been flying buy. Poof and it’s Friday again.

We have not been working on the Defender building every day, but have been getting the job done, taming the cables in to their labeled 230 plus markings. Twice we have got to the point…. all done, and then, “Oh by the way we also want some cables here…” It’s been good, going over all the needs as much as possible, plotting possible issues, laying some extra conduit, thinking about sound and TV and online learning.

While we have been working a lot of Drywall has gone up, several of the classrooms have had a first layer of paint. Electrical work and air conditioning is getting completed, and a few inspection had happened.
